Banana Foster

Banana Foster is not technically a pie, shortcake or cobbler, but this is the closest category we have established to place it in. This is without a doubt one of the most super sweet dessert treats you will ever have. It was created originally by Ella Brennan of Brennan’s restaurant in New Orleans quite a few years ago. Since then, Banana Foster has been copied and varied by many a restaurant and home cook.

Banana Foster Recipe-

Ingredients:
(2 servings)
  • 4 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced in half lengthwise
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup good quality dark rum
  • vanilla ice cream
  • pound cake (optional)
Directions:
  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  2. Add in brown sugar (using a wooden spoon), stir and blend together.
  3. Now add in the banana halves, turn the heat up to medium-high, and cook both sides are nicely caramelized.
  4. Take the pan off the burner, add in the rum, set it afire with a long grilling lighter. Stand back when the dish lights up, and flambe the bananas. Be cautious – hold the pan in such a way that the shooting flames will not catch anything on fire.
  5. Let the flame die down and the alcohol cook out – it’s the flavor of the rum you want, not so much the alcohol.
  6. To serve your bananas foster, ladle the bananas and plenty of the brown sugar rum juices into a serving bowl and top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. An optional way is to first lay a slice of pound cake in the bottom of the bowl. But this Super Sweet Banana Treat is already so sweet, the Old Silly doesn’t need the cake added. But that’s up to you.
  7. Enjoy! (and then brush your teeth, teehee)
